If you're having that much trouble with random spawns, you may want to rethink your skill build. Having at least one type of magic early on makes things a LOT easier.

Go exploring for a few days (make sure it's at least 3; I think that's the reset time) and talk to her again. She does get new stuff in periodically.

Also, you should avoid relying too much on healing potions. They're expensive and you need all the gold you can get early on.

MaxEd: Agreed. Spiderweb games in general are great. Avernum, Geneforge and Eschalon are the only shareware RPG series currently being developed that I know of worth playing.

Saxon: if you click the one that has 'Shareware' in roman characters in the link title, it brings you to the shareware list. The names are in English (mostly). Eschalon is #8. The top title is Luxor 3. The one right above it appears to be the best RPGs list (Eschalon is #9). I think the original pos...

sarvadi - in the future, you should avoid only saving your character in the Quicksave slot. If you use another one, you can give the save a name so you can tell your saves apart.

Current plans?

In numerous posts, BW has revealed various specific changes planned in Book II. However, to my knowledge, there is nothing close to a comprehensive list of planned changes. Any chance we could get some sort of tentative change log as the development of Book II continues? I'm sure I'm not the only on...

Yeah, you can't access his quest or inventory if he's dead, sorry. Nasty things happen to bordertown quite often; you'd think they'd have better guards, what with all the ne'er-do-wellers about!

El'Lorien: you can always just fight some random encounter mobs to make up the XP. A free level is cool and all, but it's nothing you can't get on your own.

Yeah, life will be good when I find my Hide in Shadows book. This game is 20x harder without that skill!

CobraEye: You're got it exactly right for rerolling loot. Make sure to quicksave BEFORE opening the chest- once it's opened, it's been rolled and that loot ain't changing! If you save in front of an unopened chest, you can open it and either save again to keep the loot or restore to try again. As fo...

Welcome to the dark side. I can't tell you how much class I've missed because of this game. My GPA is liable to drop a point this semester thanks to Basilisk Games!

That's ok, though. Saving the world of Eschalon is more important than Dean's List. Right?

Krafen- thanks for the tips. I'm level 7 now and made it to Bordertown and Blackwater, so I have some skills now :D I got Alchemy to 5 by trainer, 7 by book, 9 by spending points. With 2 rings I can max it for potions and imbuing. I got Swords to 5 by trainer, 7 by book. I haven't yet decided which ...

CobraEye: rerolling loot might be a good way to get your first combat spell. You can reroll until you either find a scroll or find a valuable item you can sell to buy a scroll.

What skills have you trained? Eschalon is _very_ hard for a pure combat character at the beginning. Divination or Elemental will do wonders for early encounters. Also, learn to love quicksaving and reloading. You can use it to sleep in small increments so you can reload if you get 'surprised' by a r...

As far as modern mac RPGs go, your best bet is probably Spiderweb Software's many titles. I highly recommend Avernum 5.
