Re: Daggerfall is now Freeware
Amazing how much fun it still is. I never got into Morrowind and Oblivion I didn't even touch, but Arena was an entertaining little game and Daggerfall is simply worth anyone's time. I can't quite put the finger on it, but I feel that everything that came from Bethesda afterwards lacked that great h...

True Warrior Challenge change requested
From my first impressions it seems that the only real challenge is True Warrior  (apart from Pacifist maybe, but hey, who wants to cripple their game), that is, if you don't use a bow. It should be restricted to melee weapons only - the weapons that require valour (and are otherwise so darn un...

Re: The Icewind Dale series
IWD2 isn't really worth anything. The game uses a kind of utterly chopped up 3rd edition rules and is generally just too much of a trudge. IWD1 OTOH is one of the most polished dungeon romps ever (if you also get Heart of Winter which you really should). Put Trials of the Luremaster on top of it and...

Re: The Best 10 RPGs of all time!
1. Ultima VII (The Black Gate > Serpent Isle) 2. Arcanum (could have been number 1... could have been) 3. Baldur's Gate Saga 4. Neverwinter Nights 2 (a great narrative but too many bugs) 5. Dark Sun 1 (huge load of bugs and badly balanced, but one of the best atmospheres ever) 6. Faery Tale Adventur...

Re: How "Old School" is "Old School"?
The first RPGs I played were from the early 90s, so that's what I mean by oldschool. The first one was Ultima 7 - The Black Gate, closely followed by Dark Sun - Shattered Lands. That also means I missed the Goldbox games, and I never got around to playing them, because I found them too dreary and to...

Re: Discussion: possible alternatives to the saved game
one of the reasons why I like party based games is that you can always resurrect your characters as long as one of them survives (and has the money/ items to do so). I think you could do the same in a single player game, though it would be harder to avoid any logical loopholes, i.e. you could say yo...

Re: Wizard's Hats and Robes
well, there are shirts and pants... though things like sandals, cloaks and belts should fall into that category too probably. Gloves are difficult; maybe fur gloves (protect against cold) shouldn't be armor, while leather gauntlets are.

Re: RPGs that influenced me the most...
@ BasiliskWrangler [ . . . ] There's a line in your announcement of Book II, where you say something along the lines of "no black/white judgements... turning down someone's quest may open up another quest". That made me think of Arcanum instantly. Either I missed that quote from BW, or I ...

Re: Book II Questions Thread
If there are any "armies" in Book II, BW, would you consider making them closer representations of actual armies (presented for the game's purpose, that is) so we can see a screen completely filled with a totally indomitable 100 foes? No single hero can take on a whole army (or tribe, for...

Re: December Update
I think it's awesome that you can delay the game for a little while longer. If you were under contract with a major publisher, the game would probably have been out for months already, with all the missing content and multitude of bugs that would entail.

Re: Ongoing narrative in Book II
From what I've read , Book II will improve on pretty much every area there is, so we should all be fine no matter what our preferences are  That said, personally, I've come to care less and less about storyline in an RPG since I was 12. I remember playing Ultima 7 as a kid and being totally aw...

Re: Character builds for Book II
I did something very similar for Book I a while back, though I came up with different sets than yours - I never did get around to posting it though... ;) By all means, post them. It's always neat to get some fresh input from others. Note though that I did not create my builds purely with effectivit...

Re: Character builds for Book II
For starters you can choose between a Male or Female character, and in addition to the small attribute bonus, your Title can vary based on your Axiom+Class+Gender selection. Also, in Book I we based the free skill on your Class, but in Book II we base the free skill on your Title. That's great to h...
