Re: Turn back - your fate awaits elsewhere (spoiler?)

Ah, cool! Thanks for the heads-up, BW!

Will you put a powder keg in the first room of that DLC plz? For me? ;)

Re: Turn back - your fate awaits elsewhere (spoiler?)

Hmm, fair enough -- so you are saying I would have had to use that powder keg anyway? I should come back later?

Design-wise, IMHO, I do think a more traditional barrier (a closed portcullis? a sparkly thingy?) would be preferable to the "don't go here" help text.

Turn back - your fate awaits elsewhere (spoiler?)

Loving Book 2 so far! Here's a weird thing. In Farrock Caves, level 1, I used a powder keg to blow up a cracked wall, near the border between the bandit area and the spider area. The blast revealed a passage that led north to a small room with stairs down. But when I try to take the stairs, it doesn...

Re: Female vs male character attributes and skills

In my opinion, the reason NOT to do gender-based stat bonuses is that those stat bonuses reinforce prejudices about gender-based limitations. I know it's only +1, I know on average men are stronger in the real world. I don't dispute that. But when you strip it all away, you are left with the fact th...

Re: Do you want loot/pick lock/disable trap to be changed ?

I've sounded off about this in other threads, but Yes -- change it. People are tempted to re-roll because the systems that are rerollable (loot, lockpicking, etc) are amenable to being abused. They rely too heavily on randomness and they don't reward significant achievements (the loot system) or ski...

Re: Book II design question

Realmzmaster: First off... Alternate Reality. What an awesome game. Probably the only RPG that modeled the effect of rainy weather on the types of monsters you'd encounter. Thank you for that little trip down memory lane. :) I see your point about letting people play how they want. However, my perso...

Re: Book II design question

It's pointless to debate whether this is a matter of "personal integrity." The onus should not be on the player at all. Game designers have a responsibility to try to eliminate opportunities for abuse in the systems they design. That's just part of good game design. If something can be abu...

Re: Book II design question

BW, I'm one of the people who have raised issue before. I personally do not like the one-minute reload limit. That seems like a very blunt instrument and could lead to all sorts of unforseen problems. In my prior posts on this issue I've recommend the "store the random seed in the savefile"...

Although it wasn't a review of Eschalon, GamerDad's review of Avencast opened with some significant praise of how Basilisk Games handled the publicity and release of Eschalon. It also called Escalon "a darling of the RPG community." Very nice! I thought it was worth posting here, since it ...

Rollor, hmm, I guess BW's post was ambiguous. I assumed he meant it would be generated the *first time* you enter a map and then saved with the map file.

My only concern with generating all the treasure at map load is that it might conflict with the system that scales the treasure based on character level. Imagine this scenario: I, a brave and curious lowbie, poke my nose through the door of a Deep Dark Dungeon. I realize I am too low level to explor...

Maybe I'm not understanding your question. But if you got the quest to go find the alternate northern route, and then you went and found the northern route, didn't you actually complete the quest? That's why it "disappeared." If you take that quest from the dying soldier, you are not taske...

store random seed to remove temptation to re-roll treasure

As I'm sure we ALL know, in E:B1 the loot inside containers (and vendor inventories) is randomly rolled upon opening the container. Given the vast variability in the rewards any given chest can yield (weapon fragments, anyone?), the temptation to re-roll loot (i.e. open container, reload quicksave, ...

mkreku -- great idea to look at the map file. I didn't even think of that. Good to know that no more hunting around is needed. :)
