Yes, good old Rolemaster and it's pages of combat modifiers. I've always been surprised that the Rolemaster system was never adapted to a cRPG, since all those calculations could be figured nearly instantaneously by a computer.
And yeah, D&D 4E looks like a sad, sad joke.

I don't get it, why on earth would someone want to save skillpoints after a level-up? I can't think of any reason at all to do so, someone care to elaborate? In a game with a wide-open character development system like Eschalon, it's really easy to spread your skill points too thinly. So if you can...

There are no blanket rules for the genre. Each RPG system has it's own set of rules, so there are differences, but also similarities. Experience points being used to determine level advancement is pretty common, as are measures of character durability like hit points, and pretty much all systems use...

I've been wandering around checking forums here and there for RPG games for thoughts on Eschalon thus far. What I'm glad to see, and expected, is the sheer diversity of in-game experience people are having with different character builds and how those builds affect how the game is played. With so ma...

Re: Sales?
Incidentally, is there some sort of hidden derived luck stat? My second character got way better stuff than my first from the get-go. Heh.. I asked Thomas the very same thing when I was beta testing the demo! My first character made it through with really very little in the way of good treasure, bu...

Right. Your chosen class will give you one free skill at creation, but from that point out you can choose whichever skills you want regardless of your chosen class. From what I recall of the demo, your class does not interfere with which skills you can take, but your stats do play a role. So while a...

I think rogues get the most love from the skill system, but you have to be careful you still have some combat ability. You don't really need to stick to archetypes, though, with the open skill system. Rogues do get a lot of love, but at the same time get a lot of responsibility. To go the thief rou...

I've found that it's often the developers listening to the audience that helps solidify a lasting fanbase and lasting impression. I remember way back when, BioWare and Black Isle Studios both listened to and interacted with their audience via their message boards, and often took suggestions to heart...

Re: A word from Basilisk Games
As we approach the release of our first game, I want to thank everyone here for supporting the project. Whether you've been following the development for two years or two days, we're very glad you are part of the game's launch. A huge congratulations on the final release of Escahlon! I've been foll...

Huzzah on the very near release date! A big congratulations on the game reaching release status, that's a fantastic accomplishment! I've been craving a good RPG lately but haven't wanted to replay anything I already own, so the timing is excellent. Of course I'll have to cut into my wine budget to b...
