I think the author did a lot of specific combat scripts in addition to the AI, this made the game better. He set many of the monsters actions individually for each encounter.

I thought it was a pain. The first part of the game was fine. Then the second part with the six castles of the evil minions was too much. I stopped playing.

I find China Mieville's books to be well written, but his social commentary which he peppers throughout the books gets on my nerves. You have to play close attention to catch it, however.
