The best thing you can do is start with Hide in Shadows at 5 and wait until dark. Move around a bit to stay hidden as you attack and your location becomes known. Fighting in the dark is slow and boring, but not taking damage because they can't hit you does pay off. The downside is sometimes the enemy moves away and you never get experience for killing them.

Your choice on light or heavy armor and favorite weapon class.

If you don't mind hundreds of save and reloads, then only 1 level in Pick Locks (starting skill) and Skullduggery (remove traps) will maximize experience when you do them. You do need some patience to stand next to a chest to determine if it's trapped and perception in the 20 to 30 range will help as well as provide for some spell casting.

Pour all your attribute points into Dex to start with. You can boost strength later, when you have points to spare.
Bows are good for rogues--your choice whether you want to spend the points right away, or skulk around and run away a lot before you can buy the skill from the trainer.

It also depends on how much of a rogue you want to be of course. I'm currently going through my second game playing as a rogue, focusing on hide in shadow and move silent. So far I haven't killed anyone directly, I did use a portcullis to kill a certain goblin to get a certain key. I didn't spend any skill points on armor or weapons and I'm still wearing my starting outfit. Of course I'm purely traveling at night and I'm putting out any torch I come across.

So in terms of challenges I'm doing
  • Lover, not a Fighter
  • No Magic
  • Pure Mage (it only says you can't use any weapon other than a staff or dagger, and I'm not using any weapons at all)
  • The Shadow
Next time I'll try to add a touch of Nood and Speed Game in it.

This style of play is fun and challenging. You can't sneak past the Dimensional Eye in Shadowmirk, though. You might want to stock up on Demon Oil.

Exactly. And as I noticed with the ranger of my first game, the Behold*woops*Dimensional Eye can see you even if you are hidden. Could be that I'm wrong but that's how I remembered it.

Dimensional eyes and poltergeists can attack hidden in shadows characters. It's probably because they have a magical attack or their nature. I haven't tried invisibility against them.

Shadowmirk pretty much prevents a non-combat game since that dimensional eye has to die to get the doors open. No nice powder keg or porticullis to use there. I think all the other key characters can be lured into a trap or there is someone around to be charmed.

There's also a couple of noximanders and a raptor that have to die to open another gate. You can let the raptor kill the noxis, but even if it gets poisoned in the process it probably won't die of it. You'll have to help.
