The Old and the New

Post by DrDungeon »

Hi guys! I decided to make my old game, ULTIZURK III: The Guildmaster's Quest available for free on my site. Its 14 years old so will run in a DOSBOX.

This is mostly to compare with the new, nearly-done ULTIZURK IV: Lord of the Cyclops.

You can see the radical differences made in 14 years, much of which involved working on the monster that is Ultizurk 4.

You can see an old UZ3 pic and a lot of UZ4 pics at my site, plus download UZ3 at the bottom of the page. You roam the land with this blonde siren and...you'll see! Definitely not your kill-the-evil-wizard game. :)

Comments are welcome - I'd like to hear what you all think of it.

Here's my page link:

P.S. Sorry for the somewhat klunky mouse control in UZ3. I had just learned how to program the mouse. :)

Looks interesting; I'll give it a try, thanks.
Certainty: a character-driven, literary, turn-based mini-CRPG in which Vasek, legendary "Wandering Philosopher", seeks certainties in a cryptically insular, organic, critically layered city.

The old ones like Ultizurk 3 and MadMan, or "The Great Ultizurkian Underland" which can be found on the net, are old DOS games and will play in the DOSBox utility. These are so old now I've basically released them for free.

Ultizurk IV: Lord of the Cyclops is native Intel-Mac. I plan to release it on the Mac first to see how it is received. If they like it even reasonably so, I can port it to Windows. Fortunately, I'm using a cross-platform language which helps a lot with this.

All I'm waiting on now is the rest of the music score. Trouble is I can't rush Jay as he's doing this for free and is currently busy on his movie project. Plus I need to figure out the best way to distribute this. Any ideas?

You can hear some samples of similar music as UZ4's tracks are similar to those in Jay's movie. Listen to the background tracks on these two trailers from his movie - especially the second one. Its similar in flavor to the tracks already in the game.

UZ4 music is similar but more sci-fi. I told him "make it sound like something from 2001: A Space Odyssey". He worked 8 hours one day making the intro music and it is indeed creepy and fitting as UZ4 could be seen as a kind of "War of the Worlds" in a medieval time. We'll see what happens.

Of course I've also gotten lazy! I'm playing Eschalon 1 and soon to purchase both games so I'm not getting any work done! From a developers and gamers perspective these games are AMAZING. I can only bow to the genius who made them.

For distro, outside of the usual Indie friendly suspects like Gamersgate and Impulse...and the less-so-but-sometimes Steam, something like Desura might work out pretty well?

http://www.desura.com/ I believe they have their beta stuff well under way and the initial reactions have been good and especially Indie-friendly----what with that being the point and all.
