I am also ranger level 10 now. Was hard between 6 to 8 I would say. But that's probably because I decide on spreading somewhat my skills before reaching blackwater where you can add for money the divination and elemental and melee weapon.
I am now 10 bow and 7 sword and with the help of an accuracy amulet and some enchanted arrows (+1to hit, +2 damage) even the cute but deadly raptors have a hard time reaching me.

Only thing is the weight of arrows and their cost. I am only 2 in mercantile so the flight arrows are 7gold apiece !!!! and 10/1pound so you can get easily 30 to 40 pounds just of arrows if you want to be sure before goind to a new map....

But I am in Vela now, and doing just fine with the little goblin bombers ;-)

Level is with boosts from items. Unboosted is in parens. Let's see...

Alch 10(7) - some points, some train, some book
Div 9 - all points
Lt Armor 3 - all points
Cartogrophy 8(6) - some points, some book
Dodge 4 - all points
Hide in Shadows 4(1) - all book
Meditation 5(0)
Move Silently 1 - all points (chose this at the beginning, but abandonned it later for other skills)
Pick 4(1) - all book
Survival 1 - all points (another beginning skill abondonned)
Bludgeon 1 - all book
Bow 7 - mostly points, maybe 1 train
Cleave 5(2) - all points
Thrown 1 - all train (didn't want to miss with demon oil)

I did once, when I had no thrown skill, and managed to light myself on fire. That was my motivation for getting at least level one.

I prefer the sword/bow combo. Actually, starting with a melee weapon skill is much harder than starting with Bow skill. First time around, I started with a sword (kept dying, dammit, it was pathetic), then I found an archery book, then got trained with bow, then added even more points. Second time I decided to start with the bow - heh, the game is a piece of cake, that way. No more dying, no sir. And I liked that Gravedigger flame amulet very much... 8)
I had so much gold, I could probably buy the whole village, let alone arrows. Besides, you can find arrows everywhere.

I have found the cleavers to weigh less than the swords=more arrows.

Thanks for the list chamr, its good to see how people progress with different builds.

Can I just point out to you ranger/archer guys that there's a beautiful divine spell for you called entangle. Not only does it stop your opponent's advance and allow you to pepper him but it also increases your chance to hit.

As a druid at bow skill lvl 2 plus magick boosts I was at 98% :D

Suggest ya pick it up BUT it doesn't work on some creatures!

True, but the thing weighs a tonne. No Archer would have the strength to hold it and cast spells. Not to mention because it weighs a heap, thats less arrows you can cart about.

Cleavers have the best damage to weight ratio.

Since when it's damage to weight so important, lol? It's your damage per round that makes your day.

Since if you wanted to cast spells? Since if you wanted to carry more stuff like, well, arrows since we are talking about archers here?

Aren't you able to switch to something more lightweight to cast spell?
Aren't you able to completely remove the bulky stuff before spellcasting?
And as for carrying stuff, have you ever considered raising your strength a bit?

1)Yes, but because we are talking about an Archer, that defeats the purpose as it will be a bow in the other hand.

2)Yes, but unless you want to keep going into your inventory every time you want to cast a spell...sure, it can be done. Then you can go back into your inventory after casting and change things, and when you want to cast another spell, ad infinitum.

3)What kind of character are we building here then? This thread is for an ARCHER not some warrior build with a bit of archery tacked on. It would be a waste of points throwing them into strength if you wanted a super duper archer. Sword (Insert preferred melee weapon) would be the secondary point spender.
